5 Delicious, Gluten and Dairy-Free Holiday Desserts with Essential Oils

5 Delicious, Gluten and Dairy-Free Holiday Desserts with Essential Oils

The holidays are fast approaching, can you believe it? Baking with essential oils is a fabulous way to spice up your cooking, especially during holidays. Essential Oils are used all over the world for a variety of health reasons. They act as a natural remedy for many different illnesses, plus some of them can replace dry or fresh herbs and spices in cooking.

So let's dig into our favorite essential oils for baking festive goodies and how you can add them to your holiday desserts collection!

There are several reasons that we especially love essential oils rather than other alternatives:

  • Essential oils can add A LOT of the flavor you're seeking without altering baked goods color or consistency. For example, cinnamon leaf essential oil is clear and doesn't turn cookies or muffins a solid brown like ground cinnamon spice.
  • Baking with essential oils is a better and HEALTHIER alternative than working with extracts, which most of the time are synthetic with added commercial fragrances and coloring. Lemon and peppermint essences, like many others, for example, are produced with alcohol. This often alters the taste of your goodies. Why add alcohol to your baked treats when you can utilize just a few drops of certified organic essential oils?

Make sure to heed these basic safety and usage suggestions when baking with essential oils:

  • Make sure to use glass or stainless steel bowls and utensils. Citrus oils can damage plastic and other petroleum-based products.
  • Store your essential oils properly in a dark cupboard in your kitchen, away from heat
  • To make sure you don't accidentally add too many drops of essential oils to your recipe, you can measure them over a bowl.
  • Oftentimes, a toothpick to a maximum 1 drop of essential oil is sufficient to get a huge boost of flavor. Just moisten a clean toothpick into the essential oil bottle, then transfer the toothpick and whirl it around in the mixture or batter that you want to season. This is especially useful with strong oils like clove.
  • It's also important to be cautious with your oils. If your kids regularly help you bake, then be mindful of keeping the oils out of reach.

  • In a medium-sized bowl, combine erythritol, cocoa powder, coconut oil, and vanilla. Stir the mixture well to combine thoroughly.

Baked Apple with Nutmeg & Cinnamon Essential Oil

Instructions:

  • Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a pie pan with nonstick spray.
  • Mix the oats, erythritol, and flour in a glass bowl.
  • Use a stainless steel fork to blend in the coconut oil until your mixture has a nice crumbly texture. Timesaver tip: Throw all the above ingredients into a food processor and pulse 3 – 6 times until the mixture's texture is crumbly.
  • Add the dried fruit and essential oils to the mixture and combine well. Then place this mixture in the refrigerator while you prepare the apples.
  • Cut a small portion of the base of each apple to make a smooth edge so that they can remain straight in the baking pan.
  • Using a knife and spoon, carve out the core and the seeds. Make sure not to cut through the bottom of the apple. Tip: If you do unintentionally cut through to the base of the apple, just arrange the apple inside of a piece of foil. Adjust the foil around the whole base and up the sides of the apple a little to catch all the buttery goodness as it bakes.
  • Spoon the mixture into each apple. Pack it down as much as possible, and also allow it to flow onto the roof of the apples.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. The apple should be soft and allow a knife to pierce with ease.
